After downloading, install Ledger Live on your device. The installation process is straightforward:

  • Windows: Run the .exe file and follow the installation wizard
  • macOS: Open the .dmg file and drag Ledger Live to your Applications folder
  • Linux: Run the AppImage file or use your package manager
  • Mobile: Install directly from the App Store or Google Play Store

Initialize Your Ledger Device

Connect your Ledger device to your computer using the provided USB cable. Follow these activation steps:

  1. Power on your Ledger device by connecting it to your computer
  2. Press both buttons simultaneously when prompted to "Set up as new device"
  3. Choose a PIN code (4-8 digits) using the device buttons
  4. Confirm your PIN code by entering it again
  5. Open Ledger Live and select "Setup new device"

Important: Choose a PIN code you'll remember but others cannot guess. You'll need it every time you use your Ledger device.

4

Secure Your Recovery Phrase (Critical!)

Your 24-word recovery phrase is the master key to your crypto assets. This is the most critical step in securing your wallet.

Recovery Phrase Security Rules:

  • NEVER type your recovery phrase on any computer or phone
  • NEVER take a photo or screenshot of your recovery phrase
  • NEVER share your recovery phrase with anyone, including Ledger support
  • NEVER store it in cloud storage or email

Proper Recovery Phrase Storage:

  • Write all 24 words on the Recovery Sheet provided with your Ledger
  • Double-check each word for accuracy and correct order
  • Store the Recovery Sheet in a secure, fireproof location
  • Consider creating a second copy stored in a separate secure location
5

Update Device Firmware

Keeping your Ledger device firmware up to date ensures you have the latest security features and supported cryptocurrencies.

How to Update Firmware:

  1. Open Ledger Live and go to "Manager" in the left sidebar
  2. Connect and unlock your Ledger device
  3. If an update is available, you'll see a blue "Update" button
  4. Click "Update" and follow the on-screen instructions
  5. Keep your device connected throughout the update process
  6. Your device will restart automatically when the update is complete

Note: Firmware updates are cryptographically signed by Ledger. Your recovery phrase and private keys remain secure during updates and are never affected.

6

Install Cryptocurrency Apps

To manage specific cryptocurrencies, install the corresponding apps on your Ledger device through Ledger Live Manager:

  • Navigate to "Manager" in Ledger Live
  • Search for the cryptocurrency you want (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)
  • Click "Install" next to each app
  • Approve the installation on your device when prompted

Common Troubleshooting

Device Not Detected by Ledger Live

  • • Try a different USB cable (use the original Ledger cable if possible)
  • • Try a different USB port on your computer
  • • Unlock your Ledger device by entering your PIN
  • • Update to the latest version of Ledger Live
  • • On Windows, install the USB driver from Ledger's website

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ledger Live?
Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile application for managing your Ledger hardware wallet. It allows you to install apps, manage your crypto portfolio, send and receive cryptocurrencies, stake assets, and keep your device firmware up to date - all while your private keys remain secured offline on your Ledger device.
Do I need both a Ledger device and Ledger Live?
Yes, both work together for maximum security. Your Ledger hardware device stores your private keys offline and signs transactions securely. Ledger Live is the interface that lets you manage your accounts, view your portfolio, and broadcast transactions to the blockchain. Think of your Ledger device as a secure vault and Ledger Live as the window to manage it.
Which cryptocurrencies does Ledger support?
Ledger supports over 5,500 cryptocurrencies and tokens including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Litecoin (LTC), Cardano (ADA), Polkadot (DOT), Solana (SOL), and thousands of ERC-20 tokens. You can view the complete list in Ledger Live's Manager section or on Ledger's official website.
Is Ledger Live safe to use?
Yes, Ledger Live is completely safe when downloaded from official sources (ledger.com, Apple App Store, or Google Play Store). Your private keys never leave your Ledger hardware device, and all transactions must be physically approved on the device itself. Ledger Live only displays your public addresses and account balances. Never download Ledger Live from unofficial sources or third-party websites.
What if I lose my Ledger device?
If you lose your Ledger device, your funds are safe as long as you have your 24-word recovery phrase. Simply purchase a new Ledger device, and during setup, choose "Restore from recovery phrase." Enter your 24 words in the exact order, and you'll regain complete access to all your accounts and assets. This is why securing your recovery phrase is absolutely critical.
Can I use Ledger Live on multiple devices?
Yes, you can install Ledger Live on multiple computers and mobile devices. Your accounts are linked to your Ledger hardware device, not the Ledger Live application. You can view your portfolio and manage accounts from any device where Ledger Live is installed, as long as you have your Ledger device to approve transactions.
How often should I update my Ledger firmware?
You should update your Ledger firmware whenever a new version is available. Firmware updates include security enhancements, new features, and support for additional cryptocurrencies. Ledger Live will notify you when updates are available. Updates are safe and will never affect your recovery phrase or private keys.
Will Ledger support ever ask for my recovery phrase?
NO, NEVER! Ledger support will NEVER ask for your 24-word recovery phrase, PIN code, or private keys under any circumstances. Any communication requesting this information is a scam. Only enter your recovery phrase directly on your Ledger device screen when restoring a device, never on a computer or phone.
Can I use Ledger with other wallet applications?
Yes, Ledger devices are compatible with many third-party wallet applications like MetaMask, Electrum, Exodus, and others. Your Ledger device can be used with these applications to sign transactions while keeping your private keys secure. However, Ledger Live provides the most comprehensive and integrated experience for managing your Ledger device.
What's the difference between Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, and Stax?
All Ledger devices provide the same level of security. The differences are in features: Nano S Plus is the affordable entry point with USB-only connectivity; Nano X adds Bluetooth for mobile use and larger storage capacity; Ledger Stax features a large E Ink touchscreen and premium design. All use the same Secure Element chip and support the same cryptocurrencies.
